Central Greece - Meteora

1 Day excursion

Meteora is a complex of monasteries built upon the spectacular rock formations of northern Greece. Located near the town of Kalambaka, the sandstone and conglomerate peaks of Meteora are composed of a geological formation known as “tall rocks on a plain.” The first monks climbed to the summit of these immense rocks in the 14th century in order to “lift their souls to God;” since then, twenty-four monasteries have been built. Of the twenty monasteries, only six are still active today. Each monastery was built with a unique basket-like system of pulleys and ropes which allowed goods, supplies, and monks alike to be raised and lowered to the summit.

The monasteries at Meteora contain a wealth of religious artifacts as well as beautiful frescoes, some of which were painted by famous Greek painters. Visitors to the monasteries can explore the churches and smaller chapels, some of which remain open for services. Visitors can also climb to the tops of the soaring rocks for unparalleled views of the surrounding valley.

On this day trip, travelers can explore the UNESCO-listed monasteries scattered atop the unique rock formations, spend time taking photos and experiencing the breathtaking views, and learn about Meteora’s centuries-old history and its significance to Greek culture.

Our trip will begin early in the morning. We will pick you up at a designated point at or very near your accommodation at the scheduled pick-up time, unless otherwise specified.

Then we will head towards the south of the island, to the port of Lefkimi.

As soon as we arrive at the port, we will be transferred onto the ferry to cross to the mainland.

The ferry departs at 6.30 pm. In an hour, we will be at the port of Igoumenitsa on mainland Greece.

Thereafter, we will need 2h20min to get to our first stop, which will be in Kalambaka.

Kalambaka is a small town situated on the foothills of an extraordinary geological phenomenon, the giant cliffs of Meteora.

During your journey to Meteora, you will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of mainland Greece.

You will travel through two administrative regions of Greece, such as Epirus and Thessaly.

You will travel along the new motorway, which will pass through tunnels and high, long bridges.

And then you will drive along a winding road with magnificent scenery.

When we arrive at Kalampaka, we will stop by a souvenir shop before visiting monasteries.

There, you can take a break after the road, use the toilet, and see an exhibition of handmade icons. You can also buy some souvenirs from Meteora.

After our brief stop, we will go to the tops of the rocks to visit the monasteries.

Currently, the Meteora monastery complex consists of six active monasteries, four of which are for men and two for women. On the tour, you will be able to see all six monasteries and capture them on your cameras from the viewing platforms of the monasteries you will visit. You will also have special stops for pictures.

During this excursion, you will visit one monastery for men and one for women. You will be guided through the rich history and religious tradition of the area. You will be able to see magnificent Byzantine architecture, Frescoes from the 14th and 16th centuries, and rare icons. High towers with a wooden winch and netting, which once lifted the monks to the monasteries, a huge wooden barrel for 12 tones of the 16th century, and many other things, you can see it all.

After visiting two monasteries, we will go to Kalambaka, where we will stop for lunch at the local restaurant. Thereafter, we will go back to the port of Igoumenitsa.

There is a dress code to enter Meteora monasteries.

Women will need to wear a long skirt that goes below their knees.

It’s not enough to keep your knees covered, so no trousers or shorts.  It is also important to cover the shoulders, let’s note that they are much stricter about wearing a long skirt.  So wear a long skirt/dress or have a scarf ready to tie around your pants.

However, all the monasteries have skirts and shawls at the entrances that you can borrow or buy.

Men should wear a t-shirt or long sleeve shirt (no sleeveless shirts) and pants, or long shorts that hit just below the knee.

Remember that the monasteries are places of worship, so be respectful and conduct yourself properly.

In each monastery, there is an entrance fee of 3 Euros  per person. Kids up to 12 years old, don’t pay the entrance fee to the monastery.

The monasteries do not accept credit card.
